Realistic Drawing Workshop

Subject: Trompe l'Oeil

Date: October 18-20, 2019

What is Trompe l'Oeil?

Pronounced “tromp” (like "romp" plus a “t”)
and “loy” (rhymes with boy).
This artwork so realistic that it looks like actual objects are displayed in a frame instead of a painting or drawing.

Trompe l'Oeil literally means "To Fool The Eye".

As adults, we obtain a sense of security in our
ability to distinguish between what is real and what is not.  When confronted with something that – if only for an instant – makes us question our perception of reality, we are intrigued and experience a thrill like a child at a magic show.

About This Drawing Workshop:

I'm very excited to offer this workshop where you will learn the realistic drawing techniques that I'm most known for. I'll take you step by step to render this illusion.

If you are unfamiliar with the phrase, Trompe l'Oeil is a French term literally meaning "to deceive the eye." It dates back as far as 400 B.C. and was part of the rich culture of the Greek and Roman Empires.  It is artwork that attempts to be so realistic that the viewer is fooled into thinking that actual three-dimensional objects are being displayed rather than a two-dimensional representation of those objects.

Traditionally, the preferred medium for this type of fine art has been oil painting, but using my techniques of blending charcoal and graphite pencils, you'll be able to create a drawing that will amaze the viewer.

  • Successful trompe l'Oeil artwork should, at least temporarily, fool the viewer into thinking that real objects are being displayed.
  • You will learn how to create the delicate smooth shading and crisp clean edges required to create this convincing illusion.
  • High contrast is also necessary to "fool the eye" and you'll learn the techniques and pencils to use to make the image "pop".
  • The techniques and concepts you learn here will transfer to any subject you draw in the future.
  • Compositional aspects of trompe l'oeil will also be explored so you will leave with the knowledge to set up and execute your own successful trompe l'Oeil drawing.
  • As with all my workshops, you are encouraged to bring examples of your previous work for me to evaluate privately.

All supplies are included so there is absolutely nothing you will need to bring except your desire to learn.

If you are concerned about "not being good enough" to take this class. Let me assure you that you will do fine. I've had kids as young as 10 years old learn these techniques with amazing results.

Because this is a new subject and I have had a lot of requests to do a trompe l'oiel workshop, I expect this class to sell out quickly. If you would like to join me and be one of 20 enthusiastic students to learn the techniques necessary to create these amazing illusions...

"Awesome! The atmosphere of camaraderie and friendly encouragement is
set by JD. What a nice guy. Plus, he knows stuff and shares whatever he knows. It's fun and informative. I want to attend more!
Joyce, TX

"I've always been interested in pencil drawing and really wanted to be a part of one of JD's workshops, but as a beginner, I was afraid I wasn't good enough. I'm so glad I finally did this. JD taught me more in 1 hour than I have every thought possible. He is a great teacher and a friendly critic."
Kim, OH

"This class was exactly what I needed to take me to the next level. JD's teaching style is so encouraging for artists of any level. Everything I hoped to learn in this class was delivered. I had such a pleasant and satisfying experience. Thank You, JD Hillberry- it was great!" Melanie, ID

"The workshop was wonderful! Full of great information and with a light heartedness in the classroom. I loved learning the new techniques and having an opportunity to practice them with JD's personal, friendly guidance. Not only is JD's work inspiring, but also the way he engages the students and shows interest in their development as an artist."
Anne, AZ

"I  had the most helpful, fun, learning experience I have ever had in my life. I have learned sooo
much it's unbelievable. I loved this workshop!"
Zeinab, TX

"For many years, I have harbored a deep love of drawing. Due to a fear of my lack of knowledge and experience, I rarely if ever attempted to draw. I ran across JD's work on the internet and knew that I could learn so much from his workshops. Within the first 2-3 hours, I learned more than I had ever believed possible. By the end of the 4 days, it was apparent by my work how much I had learned... stuff that would have taken me years to figure out on my own!"
Maree, UT

"This workshop was great for all skill levels and all ages. The challenge to stretch existing skills was given with clear and concise direction. JD is very articulate and does not waste words. Every sentence is gold!" Marlene, CO "I appreciated that you critiqued everyone equally. Sometimes instructors focus more on the more "talented" participants,. Your comments were also very specific, which is extremely helpful."
Cheryl, TX
